Espanola police confirm a 16-year-old boy was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Sunday morning.

Now, one of his friends is speaking out and says Victor Villalpando was just misunderstood.

"He was a nice guy. If people got to know him better he would have had way more friends," he said.

Two officers responded to a report of a suspicious person around 10 a.m. near Riverside Drive and Corlett Road. The officer made contact with Victor Villalpando, 16, who police said pointed a gun at the officers. The teen was then shot by one of the officers and transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The friend says Vialpando was the same student who allegedly made some sort of threat at McCurdy Charter School in January.

"Apparently, he had messaged a friend not to go to school today because something was going to happen," the friend said.

Police investigated the threat, but found no evidence was found.

Police never released the identity of who made those threats, but Vialpando's friend says he never saw him at school after that day.

New Mexico State Police have not released any additional information at this time.
