(NBC News) -- Las Vegas police spent much of the early morning Monday at a small apartment complex four miles from the scene of a deadly shooting rampage that left five people dead.

Officers believe the man and woman responsible for the killing spree lived at the apartments, and neighbors tell the Las Vegas Review Journal that the couple were "anti-government militants" who talked openly about white supremacy and killing police.

According to investigators their day began at a CiCi's Pizza restaurant just before noon, where they ambushed police officers Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo, one of the suspects apparently yelling "this is the start of a revolution" as they opened fire.
