SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) - A council seat in a troubled New Mexico border city has been vacant for six weeks and it may stay that way for a while.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea has only received one application to fill that vacancy and city officials are practically begging for more candidates.
Councilor Christian Lira, who withdrew from his race but was re-elected anyway earlier this year, resigned in May to run unsuccessfully for a state house seat.
Perea says the vacant seat is stalling city business.
In 2012, Sunland Park drew national attention after a mayoral candidate was charged with extortion for secretly recording an opponent receiving a lap dance from a topless woman in his campaign office.
