With a unanimous vote, it was official. The ban on recreational marijuana sales in La Plata County was lifted.

"I'm happy that it’s going though in southwestern Colorado," said Zach McManus, a prospective recreational pot licensee.

McManus was on hand Tuesday to see the vote by the La Plata county commission, enacting the new ordinance governing the recreational marijuana industry.

"I think they have seen that there have not been a lot of problems in the industry and everything is moving forward in a professional manner and I think that is a positive thing for the community."

He plans to apply for a license to sell recreational marijuana, but he says it's not just about the money.

"It is good to see this working on a more basic scale where anyone has access to it and it’s not something you need a doctor’s recommendation or a specific medical condition to receive the benefits from," he said.

Right now, he says that the social stigma is one of the biggest hurdles in the industry.

"It’s going to take time to get over the reputation that it has had attached to it for a long time, I think people are coming around quite quickly, especially with crime statistics and economic statistics, I think people’s minds are changing even quicker than they thought they would."

The ordinance goes into effect 30 days from Wednesday. At that time, license applications will be accepted. Prospective licensees will be required to so through two hearings which can take no longer than a year from the date of application before the license will be issued.
