Local doctor no longer deals with insurance companies

An Albuquerque doctor fed up with insurance companies says she’s finished with them all.

Dr. Janice Moranz doesn’t need a microscope to know her income has shrunk since she dumped the insurance companies six months ago – but she is still making a living. Less income, fewer patients, and a great reduction in headaches over lost and denied and partially paid claims. No more worries about reimbursement rates spiraling constantly downward.

What sealed the deal for the Albuquerque dermatologist was HIPAA – the federal law that requires electronic medical records. It penalizes doctors who don’t comply with the complicated rules, sometimes with fines of up to $1 million. No insurance? No HIPAA.

"I don’t need that kind of liability," Dr. Moranz said in an interview in her new, much smaller office at 6821 Montgomery NE. "I'm not on this earth to worry about things like that, and so if I can just get rid of it and see patients – it's been great! I have more time. I've been talking to patients more. I have some interesting patients I never knew were so interesting."

If a patient has insurance, no problem. Dr. Moranz will treat them for what they would pay out of pocket anyway.

"If someone is on a certain insurance plan which has a co-pay, I am willing to take their co-pay and just see them for the co-pay," Moran said. "It could be anywhere from $10 – I think the highest one we have is about $55."

If a patient is on Medicare, the doctor lets them decide what they can afford to pay. She said it ranges from nothing to $90.

Will she make it? A full year should answer that question. She’s six months into it right now.
