A Clinton, Iowa mailman is being hailed as a hero after going out of his way to help an elderly woman on his route.

Her oxygen was unhooked and she was panicked, unable to use her phone.   Then the mailman arrived, and helped save Karen Boles' life.

"Walking by her house and she was in the living room, sitting in her chair, but I could tell she needed some oxygen," said letter carrier Bill Randall.

Bill said Karen seemed confused so he called Mercy Home Medical Equipment, hoping to get someone out to fix her oxygen.

"It was just more or less timing because if it would have been a half an hour earlier, she probably would have been completely fine and if it had been a half an hour later... As letter carriers, we kind of know who's who on our routes," said Randall. "So we look out for them a little bit, anyhow."

It was after hours, but a worker from Mercy Home Medical Equipment, Jon Stolley, wanted to help. When he got there Karen was in distress.

"She had some portable oxygen tanks that weren't even together, two out of the three were empty so I at least had one for her to get herself to the hospital," said Stolley.
