On Wednesday, three pit bulls escaped from a Roswell shelter and viciously attacked a 9-year-old boy.
He was rushed to the hospital, but is now at home recovering.
He talked to KOB Eyewitness News 4 about his frightening experience.
“Really rough I could barely sleep last night," said 9-year-old Colby Prince.
Three pit bulls escaped from a rescue shelter and went right for Colby as he was in his backyard watering his horses.
“So, they started jogging toward me, I told them no they stopped for a little bit then they started coming at me again and started jumping on me I told them no then they started biting me," said Prince.
The fourth grader was clawed, bitten, and mauled.
And what’s worse, he couldn’t get away.
“By the time they got me it was too late," said Prince.
The terrified 9-year-old says he thought he was going to die.
"I was thinking just don't give up, if you give up they're going to kill you," said Prince.
But then he heard his neighbor, Rosalie Gray.
"I was thinking oh my gosh she better get down here quick," said Prince.
Then his dad.
"I was really glad when my dad came out there because he shot both dogs, and I knew I didn't have to worry about it anymore,” said Prince. “He’s the best dad in the world."
Colby was flown to a Texas hospital for his injuries.
He suffered bite marks all over his body.
“You can pretty much see what the dogs had done to the shirt and to my son,” said Colby’s mother Keisha Prince pointing to the shirt Colby was wearing. “I mean look at this there's holes everywhere in it and it's just torn to shreds. It’s just a rag right now and that could have been my son’s body right there.”
Keisha says they’re thankful he’s alive.
"He's a brave boy, and I’m proud of him," said Keisha Prince.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 has learned animal control visited the rescue shelter the day before the attack for a welfare check.
Deputies tell KOB quite a few of the dogs did not have rabies shots.
The shelter was given until June 20th to get the vaccinations.
After the attack Colby’s father shot two of them.
The third is being quarantined at animal control until it is put down.
Deputies will cite the owner of the kennel.
A Colorado group rescued 15 other dogs that were seized from the kennel.
