Firefighters took advantage of lighter winds and aerial support on Wednesday to get the Assayii Lake Fire to 5 percent contained.
Crews constructed a dozer and hand line along the fire edge. The Southwest Incident Management Team 3 reports there was minimal fire movement throughout the day.
On Thursday, winds are predicted to be even lighter. More than 800 firefighters will patrol and mop up along areas of the fire edge that are secure. Dozer line construction will also continue around the northeast fingers of the fire and the southern flank.
The fire is burning more than 13,000 acres in the Chuska Mountains and has destroyed roughly five structures. At least 50 homes are threatened by the fire in the Naschitti and Sheep Springs communities.
The Southwest Incident Management Team 3 continues to urge the public not to travel on access roads leading to the Bowl Canyon Recreation Area. Road closures remain in place at N 134 at Sheep Springs to Crystal Boarding School, N 31, and N 30 at Mexican Springs.
