A career criminal led an officer on a dangerous foot chase through traffic on a busy Albuquerque street Tuesday, according to police. Luckily no one was hurt and the officer arrested the suspect, Michael Zambrano, after using a taser on him.

Police said Zambrano had six felony warrants for his arrest when the officer spotted him driving a stolen car near Lomas Boulevard and 5th Street.

When the officer confronted him at Central and 50th, police said Zambrano ran through busy rush hour traffic trying to get away. The officer who chased him said cars had to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them.

"I would consider this individual a menace to our community," said Commander Harold Medina, with the Albuquerque Police Department’s Property & Economic Crimes Division.

Police said Zambrano has been arrested at least seven times for auto theft and became a property crime offender all the way back in 1995.

Medina said repeat offenders will do anything to not go back to jail.

"There are examples time or time again in the community where we have had a property crime offender injure or kill someone in the community,” he said.

According to court documents, Zambrano told detectives he gave a drug addict heroin in exchange for the stolen car. Medina says most of the time drugs are the reason criminals like Zambrano keep committing crimes.

"If this individual doesn't get the help he needs and gets what he needs to do to stop committing crime, then once again we're going to be dealing with him and we're going to be putting together another case and putting him behind bars."

Zambrano was on parole when he was arrested Tuesday is now back in state prison.
