Police identify alleged drunk driver in double-fatal crash

ESPANOLA, New Mexico -- New Mexico State Police have identified the alleged drunk driver arrested after a double-fatal crash near Espanola last Thursday.

Justin Romero, 26, of El Rito, New Mexico, is charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle under the influence of alcohol and evading an officer.

According to State Police, Romero was traveling north on U.S. 84 in a Ford pickup truck when he suddenly crossed into the southbound lane and struck another vehicle head on.

Two people in the other vehicle were killed: 23-year-old Leo Gurule and 45-year-old Carlos Archuleta.

The New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the crash scene to complete a thorough and complete investigation of the crash.
