An Albuquerque man has found a miracle in his mother’s kitchen – an apple with an image of Jesus on it.

A lot of us can remember the Holy Tortilla that appeared in Lake Arthur, New Mexico back in 1977. It came mighty close to being a burrito – the same way the miraculous apple came close to being apple butter!

“I have a recipe from my great-great-grandmother and we make apple butter and apple sauce from scratch,” said David “Double D” Duran. “This was like the last couple of apples in the batch.”

Let’s face it: some people will just see a Fuji apple. Others, like David, will see Jesus.

“This is the first time I’ve ever seen this on a piece of fruit or any type of vegetable,” he said.

In fact, David sees Jesus holding a baby lamb – an image that’s pretty familiar to most of us.

“There’s the hair,” David said, tracing shades and shadows of red and orange and yellow on the apple’s skin. “There’s like the face and then his robe around here and then right in the middle you can see like a figure of a lamb, see – like he’s holding a lamb.”

David said the priest at Sacred Heart church has blessed and anointed the apple and neighbors have been coming to see it.

“Maybe it’s a sign from the Lord that maybe we need to change our ways and maybe look at things to be more positive in this world,” David said. “Like helping our fellow neighbors and being good to people.”

A pretty powerful message from an apple that came so close to the apple butter pot!

David’s next challenge is to find the best way to preserve the apple. Ideas?
