The New Mexico State Police officer who was critically injured after being struck by a suspected drunken driver is going home for recovery.
According to state police, officer Carlos Verdugo was released from a Lubbock, Texas, hospital on Sunday evening. He will now be recuperating at his home for an undetermined amount of time, according to Lt. Emmanuel Gutierrez.
The crash took place on Saturday night near the intersection of Navajo and US 62 in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Verdugo had pulled over a female driver for a traffic stop when a suspected drunk driver hit his patrol vehicle. Verdugo was airlifted to the University Medical Center in Lubbock in critical condition.
The woman stopped by Verdugo was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspected drunk driver, 40-year-old Jason Allred, has been charged with great bodily harm by vehicle under the influence of alcohol, two counts of aggravated DWI and reckless driving.
