He claims it was a mistake, but one Albuquerque father is in trouble with police after he reportedly left a loaded handgun with his 11-year-old daughter.

John Ruiz was in court today after a neighbor spotted his daughter with a loaded .22 caliber gun at the swimming pool located inside the Retreat at Candelaria apartment complex this weekend.

The daughter didn’t threaten anyone with the gun, and no one was injured from its presence. In fact, she told police the gun was left in her possession by her father for protection.

Ruiz, who was reportedly getting a tattoo at the time, was charged with child endangerment. He is currently out of jail on a $15,000 bond.

“You guys don’t know about harassment or anything else,” Ruiz said outside the courtroom. “We’re good people, I don’t know what to tell you. I made a mistake, that’s it.”
