Valencia County working to spray mosquitoes

Stagnant puddles in Los Lunas and Belen are all that's left of last night's storm, but what's happening inside that water could be a threat to your health: mosquitoes.

"With the rains coming, it will continue to be a brewing problem," said Kelly Boeska, the Public Works Director for Valencia County.

Mosquitos can carry the dangerous West Nile Virus. One way to attack the problem is by spraying communities with bug spray, but they can't do that in Valencia County right now.

"Currently, the individual that used to perform our vector program took another job. We did hire another individual into that position, however that individual then also took a different job within the county, so there's been some turnover," Boeska said.

Not anybody can do it, though. The sprayer has to have a license with the State of New Mexico to use the chemicals.

"Part of our program is to also manage and monitor the breeding and that's also part of our state requirement so we are doing that. It's just a matter of performing the actual spraying that we have to have in place," she said.

Fortunately, the mosquito season is in its infant stage and Valencia County will have a contractor take over the mosquito spraying program by next week.
