The UFO Festival celebrates what many believe was a crash involving a spacecraft in 1947.
Downtown Roswell has been transformed with tents, vendors, even a roller coaster.
There are alien parking signs, alien license plates, and even alien wine slushies.
Just about everyone is getting into the spirit.
Water balloon tosses, stuffed animals, and alien beer are just a few of the things to expect.
“You can't pass through here without stopping," said Russell Proulx.
People have come from all over the country.
“It’s history, it's part of the folklore of the USA," said Proulx.
"I've wanted to come here since I was eight years old," said Norman Huggins.
The festival gets thousands of visitors every year.
A majority of the activities happen downtown, but there are also dozens of guest speakers and events at the UFO museum.
It’s the museum’s biggest event, benefitting local businesses, especially the alien-themed shops that depend on this.
“We do most of our business these four days," said Gail Willis.
Willis says this weekend alone accounts for three quarters of the business she gets the entire year.
“This is our big, we prepare for this all year long,” said Willis. “We try to stock up as much as we can because we make more money here than we do any other time of the year."
The events will continue all weekend.
On Saturday, there's an Alien 5K/10K walk.
There's also an alien costume contest, alien pet contest, and lots of free activities for the kids.
