The Metropolitan Detention Center says Kevin Perkins snuck into a laundry basket while in jail, rode in it on a van to the county's alcohol treatment center and tried to escape authorities.

Police say Perkins ran to a nearby apartment complex for senior citizens, where police caught him.

MDC says APD had eyes on him and quickly surrounded the area-- that's why they didn't alert the public right away. Still, MDC says they learned a lesson.

"What we learned from here is again when you have inmates on work detail, a correctional officer or person of security background should be at the site so we can monitor to make sure that they’re doing jobs they're supposed to be and not trying to escape from our respective facilities," Tom Swisstack said.

Perkins told police he just wanted to visit his kids after not seeing them while in jail for the past year and that he planned to turn himself back in later.
