Damaging storms hit Santa Domingo Pueblo Tuesday. Flood waters washed out an important main road to the small village of Sile for the second time. This time the damage is a lot more severe.

Eldra Lovato wants to know how this happens twice. The east side of Sile road is what the west side used to look like. Before the heavens opened up on Tuesday and a massive flood crushed the system of metal culverts meant to guide water beneath the pavement when it floods.

They didn’t work this time and believe it or not, they didn’t work when the last flood hit almost a year ago. The project to fix what happened then was almost finished when it was destroyed Tuesday, but residents say the project didn’t start for 8 months. Lovato says there seem to be better options than replacing a system that didn’t work with the same system.

Jeff Lucero is the designer for rock gap engineering, the company contracted by the pueblo to build this road. Lucero says the extra culvert and a concrete guide bank were supposed to fix the problem, but now says it clearly wasn’t enough. They have to start from scratch.

Residents in Sile say they are very thankful contractors have leveled a dirt road around the destroyed culvert system so they can get home.

They say last time it took weeks to get an access road like this.
