During an arrest on Monday, an Albuquerque 5-year-old fired one round of a gun he found behind a bench in his father's front yard.
The boy's dad said his friend Gregory Grant hid the gun in the front yard before Albuquerque Police arrived to arrest the man, who was wanted for threats he made at his ex-girlfriend.
"The cops found out he was here and then they came here and the cops were like where's the gun and he's like I don't have the gun," the boy's father said.
As police began to search the man's yard for Grant's gun, the 5-year-old and his younger siblings discovered the weapon and fired one round.
"The kids started screaming and we thought they were hit we were checking them the cops were checking them real quick lifting up their shirts and stuff just making sure the kids were fine," the boy's father said. "And one of the kids got some spray back form the powder on his face."
Relief from the careless incident was felt almost immediately.
"For us all to be standing around in a circle and the kids to let that shoot off right in between all of us and not a cop or us or anyone to get hit there's god out there," the boy's father said.
Grant is currently in police custody. The boy's father is not facing any criminal charges.
