ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - That frosty tide of golden brown craft beer has finally come in, and it's helping quench New Mexico's thirst for jobs and economic development.
Dozens of microbreweries and taprooms have popped up around New Mexico in recent years, and the state's universities and colleges are now developing fermentation science programs and other classes aimed at the brewing industry.
The head of the New Mexico Brewers Guild, Chris Goblet, says curiosity about the beer scene has been piqued even more thanks to the medals being won by local brew masters.
The industry's economic impact in New Mexico is estimated at about $265 million.
Elected leaders say the potential can't be ignored given that new breweries are in the planning stages, and some established breweries want to open new taprooms and distribute their products beyond the state's borders.
