It wasn’t time to start building a big boat and herding all the animals on board, but it sure felt that way for a lot of people in Espanola after almost 5 inches of rain fell on the little city north of Santa Fe Monday night and early Tuesday morning. It didn’t have to rain for 40 days and 40 nights – 7 hours did the trick.

ATVs and pickup trucks with 4 wheel drive were the preferred means of transportation in the flooded roads north of Fairview between the Rio Grande and the old Vigiles Acequia. Espanola’s legendary lowriders were just too low for this situation. After three and a half years of drought, everybody was praying for rain, but nobody expected to get it all at one time.

“The water is all the way up to the skirting of the trailer,” said Dora Rivera. “Any higher it’s going to get inside my house. It got inside my shed. I had to pull everything out of the shed. We wanted a lot of rain, but not all at once. We didn’t want it!”

“Yeah, we like it,” agreed Juan Fernandez. “But we like it to come in at a slow pace, not in buckets of water like this. It’s awful!”

This city of 10,000 souls will dry out and recover – and hope that the next storm of monsoon season will be a little more merciful. Police and fire dispatchers said about 8 houses had some flooding.
