The woman shot by state police officers while she fled from a criminal investigation scene will face charges related to the incident.

State police said 28-year-old Roxanne Torres will be charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

Torres also had outstanding warrants for probation violations for stealing a vehicle and trafficking controlled substances.

Early Tuesday, state police made contact with Torres as they attempted to serve a warrant for another woman at 6100 Harper Drive NE.

State police said two agents from the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau fired shots at her vehicle as she fled. Authorities are investigating why the agents opened fire.

Torres crashed her vehicle a short distance away on Jefferson Street. State police said she then stole a white Kia SUV to get away.

She was later located at a Grants hospital receiving treatment for a gunshot wound. Torres was then airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. Police say she is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the upper body.

State police said Torres has a criminal history in New Mexico, including arrests for DWI, trafficking controlled substances, tampering with evidence, possession of burglary tools and vehicle theft.

Authorities have not released many details about the criminal investigation that Torres fled from on Harper Drive, but they did confirm two other women were arrested on unrelated warrants: 16-year-old Michelle Myers and 27-year-old Ashley Molian.

Torres is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
