(KHQ) -- The town of Pateros, Washington has hit particularly hard by the Carlton Complex WildFire.

More than 100 homes have been lost there, but one man risked it all to make sure the town's school remained standing.

The school has become a critical staging area for relief effort but it was almost destroyed itself when flames came within feet of the building.

With no firefighters in sight, Augustine Morales and a friend used a hose system on the back of their truck to battle back flames that were reached over his head.

"Everything was going through my mind because I have my kids and I have to take care of my kids and I'm just thinking if you die I don't know what's going to happen," Morales explained.
