Now, nine weeks after we first reported on a cemetery in Farmington where the grass was dying and plots were barren, a group gathered at the Memory Gardens in Farmington, on grass that looks better.

“It’s something that affects us all deeply, our loved ones are here and that's why so many people came out,” said Denise Lovato. Lovato has many family members interred at Memory Gardens.

More than 100 gathered Tuesday to see if things had changed and to get answers.

“What happened at the end of the season was inexperience,” explained Regional Manager for Serenity and Company, owners of Memory Gardens. He took time to address concerns from many members of the crowd and take responsibility for the condition of the cemetery.

He also apologized to the families that had members there, to his employer and to his employees. Martinez said they had hired two new members of maintenance staff and they would be working to get the cemetery back up to par.

“We are working section by section to dethatch, get dead grass out of the area, we are reseeding, we are feeding, and we are doing everything we possibly can today to improve.”

Many families in the crowd say it is a start but there is still more that can be done

“I do see some improvement, and I know they have been working on things, but they have a long way to go,” said Lovato.

She organized the group that has pushed for change.

“A lot of us have been told for months it would be improved the water will be on, and nothing happened. Now maybe it will be improved,” said Lovato, “I hope so,” she added.

And as the grass is watered today, families hope that the cemetery will be beautiful again.

“Then we can all get along and come to the cemetery and pay our respects and not have to look at the grounds like this.”
