LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A Roswell man accused of assaulting a federal officer more than a year ago has been sentenced.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for New Mexico says 55-year-old Eddie J. Vallejos pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge last week.
Vallejos entered into the plea agreement Thursday in federal court in Las Cruces.
Prosecutors say Vallejos was arrested in June 2013.
He allegedly elbowed the officer in the chest, struck him with his knee and bit his hand hard enough to draw blood.
According to a criminal complaint, the officer wanted to question him after seeing Vallejos appear to empty a bag of illegal drugs outside a federal courthouse in Roswell.
Vallejos will remain in federal custody until sentencing.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison.
