On Friday, a deputy driving along a dark forest road just south of Edgewood in Torrance County discovered a truck that crashed into a tree and a body partially covered in brush.
Soon after, he saw a man flee the area into the trees for cover.
This weekend, Torrance County Sheriff's deputies tracked the man in remote and rugged country south of where Martinez Road intersects with Ballenger Ranch Road.
Despite taking the man into custody, he has not been charged with any crime and questions remain in the mysterious homicide.
"That is fair to say, that we've taken a huge step in just locating him and interviewing him," Torrance County Sheriff Heath White said. "This was a very odd situation, but throughout the investigation, a lot more details are coming out."
The Office of the Medical Investigator has yet to determine a cause of death and deputies are unable to share more details about the investigation.
For the time being residents can rest easy that a killer is not on the loose, White said.
However, the man taken into custody has not been named a suspect in the homicide.
"A lot of people probably think there's a mass murderer roaming at large or a person with a hatchet running down the road," White said. "We've kind of heard it all so far. But you know our one and concern is public safety."
