LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Police in Las Cruces say an officer shot an armed robbery suspect after he refused to put down his weapon.
Authorities say police responded to a robbery at a Valero convenience store around 11 p.m. Friday.
Police located the suspect just south of the store and say he was carrying a large knife.
They say the man refused an officer's commands to drop the knife and the officer fired at least once, striking the suspect.
Police say the man, described as being in his 20s, was treated at the scene and then airlifted to a hospital in El Paso.
His condition at this time is unknown.
The officer who fired was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave.
