LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A judge has denied bond for a Las Cruces man accused of killing his mother with a sword as she slept last month.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Joshua Hunt was indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Hunt, his wife and their two young children had lived with his mother — 56-year-old Lisa Cano — for the past two years at the time of the July 18 killing.

Las Cruces police say Hunt apparently woke up around 4 a.m. that day and began thinking about how his mother had treated him over the years.

They say he went into Cano's bedroom and allegedly struck her in the head and hand with a long sword.

Hunt then told his wife to call police and he was later arrested.
