Saturday, an Albuquerque family became "official" and they're not your average family.

A single father, who has been fostering a brother and sister for almost two years, finally became their legal father. He wants everyone to know, you don't have to be the "norm" to take care of children who need a home.

It wasn't a birthday party and it's not a holiday, but it's a day that this family will remember forever.

Andy Meyer is a single man and a 5th grade teacher at Saint Charles in Albuquerque.  Now he's a father to two very grateful children.

"My other family, now it's like my life is better," said Andy's daughter Nahiya. "Because we didn't have a home. Now we have a home."

Nahiya and Jonathan came to Andy's home almost two years ago. The siblings had been separated in the foster system. So reuniting under one roof was all that mattered.

"Without my sister, I would cry," Jonathan told KOB Eyewitness News 4.

But now the kids will tell you this is where they want to stay. Andy quickly started the process to make his home their forever home.

"I called them and said I'm a single man, can you adopt?  They said yeah, absolutely you can definitely adopt," Andy said.

Andy wants other prospective parents to know that you don't have to have a "traditional home" to adopt. Just a lot of love to give.

"This is their day. This is their day to celebrate," said Andy. "They had a hard time, so this is their day to let go and we're a family now and just have fun."

Andy, like all foster parents, had to undergo lengthy background checks, regular home visits, and counseling and classes. But he encourages anyone who's on the fence about fostering or adopting to take that next step with CYFD.
