Albuquerque police say a robbery at a smoke shop on Menaul at Wisconsin ended with one person dead, but investigators won't say if that person was an employee or the robber.
The robbery happened at around 1:20 p.m. at Oasis Smoke Shop and Hooka Lounge, located at 8215 Menaul Boulevard Northeast.
According to APD, officers were in the process of responding to the robbery and upon arrival found a dead man.
Police took two people downtown for questioning but say they have since been released.
The identity of the deceased is pending an Office of the Medical Investigator investigation. Police say they will probably be updated on Monday.
Employees of the smoke shop told KOB Eyewitness News 4 that everyone who works there is close and there are only 10 employees, so they work with each other often.
An employee who worked at the shop until just a few weeks ago said the shop had been robbed so many times recently, the owners wanted employees to carry guns.
But those employees also say they're being told very little at this point in the investigation.
"There's two stories going on right now. One is saying a customer got involved and was shot by the robber, another is saying an employee pulled out a gun, shot the robber and killed him," an employee told KOB.
Investigators will remain at the scene into the night trying to figure out exactly what happened inside that smoke shop.
APD has reopened all eastbound and westbound lanes on Menaul between Wyoming and Virginia.
