The first day of school is always filled with lots of excitement – new teachers, friends and, of course, it's always fun riding the school bus.

"He kept saying, I think I hear it grandma!" said Rose Marie Chavez, who took her 7-year-old grandson to the school bus stop in northwest Albuquerque.

"The bus is supposed to pick us up about 7:20 or 7:26," added Chavez. But she said the bus never came.

So after waiting until 7:40 and still seeing nothing, Chavez ended up having to drive her grandson and a group of other kids, who were also waiting, to school.

APS has a contract with Herrera School Buses and Coaches. Chavez said she called them but never really got an answer about the bus.

She said all she was told was that it's always busy the first day of school and that the drivers are getting used to their routes.

But Chavez said those are all excuses. "It's unacceptable. They have plenty of time to take care of these things. These are small children. This little boy just turned 7," said Chavez.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 called Herrera and got the same answers. But after calling one more time, a woman told KOB she would look into the specific bus to see what happened.

KOB is still waiting for them to call back and so is Chavez.

"The big thing at school is not to be tardy. Well, they can't help but be tardy if the bus doesn't pick them up," said Chavez.
