An organization aimed to making sure families in need have a safe environment for their children hosted a special event. The Baby Brianna Foundation held its first fundraising gala Saturday.

The non-profit is named after 5-month-old Brianna Lopez who was killed in Las Cruces in 2002.

The baby suffered some of the worst child abuse in the state's history. Her father, uncle and mother all went to prison for her death.

Gov. Susana Martinez was the prosecutor in the case and was the guest speaker at Saturday's event.

"They have to be in home where they're loved because that is something that helps them to grow up strong and confident and able them to take on the world," said Martinez.

Meanwhile, Briana's mother Stephanie Lopez is up for parole in 2016.

People around the world have signed this petition to make sure Lopez stays in prison. It's now 3,000 pages long.
