Maggie Cordova Elementary in Rio Rancho was placed on lockout Tuesday afternoon for a short period of time while Rio Rancho police searched for a suspect who threatened a man with an axe near the school.

Police were dispatched to the Dollar Tree area on Southern Blvd. to talk to a victim who said he had been threatened by the man with an axe. The victim said he was unsure why the male suspect approached him.

An "exhaustive" search by police failed to locate the suspect, and children and staff were released by the school in phases under police supervision at 5 p.m.
