ALBUQUERQUE -- The Albuquerque Police Department cadet class will go on as scheduled, despite Police Chief Gordon Eden telling city councilors that he was going to push back the start date because of a budget issue.

APD communications director Janet Blair says the class will start in October as it was originally scheduled.

At Monday night's city council meeting, Eden said the police force can't grow beyond 940 officers, which he said might force the new cadet class to start in January to avoid overspending. Currently, there are about 905 officers with the department.

The upcoming class will consist of 30 to 40 cadets. So far, APD has received 1,200 interest cards for the class.
