The Albuquerque Police Department said its officers have launched an investigation into the August 17 incident involving the UNM women's soccer team.

Police said criminal charges could be filed as a result of their investigation.

“We'll obviously look at contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which is basically giving alcohol to minors, which is a 4th degree felony,” said APD spokesman Tanner Tixier. “And then whatever else might have arisen from the hazing. If there was a simple battery or a felony battery. If there was a simple assault or a felony assault.”

Tixier said UNM police asked APD to take over the case Friday afternoon. At first there was confusion over which agency should handle the case. At first the case went to UNM police because they were originally called and it involved students. But the case was handed over to APD after the investigation revealed the investigation happened off campus.
