The high school football season is officially underway! Mayfield made it all the way to the state final last year, coming up short to Las Cruces by one point in the title game. This year, the Trojans are poised to get another shot at the state title again.

"We got a good ball club coming up this year," said Mayfield head coach Michael Bradley. "I don't think anybody is going to count us out; I don't think anybody thinks we're a sleeper based on what we have done in the past."

The Trojans may have something that no other team in the state has: a three-year starter at quarterback. Now, Coach Bradley will tell you that football is a team game, but he knows he has one heck of an athlete in Kavika Johnson at quarterback.

"I think you have to be able to throw the football," Bradley said. "We can't run it all the time, so we are going to stretch people out and we're going to run the ball."

The Trojans open the season with Hobbs on August 30. During the season, they will also meet Eldorado and Manzano.
