New Mexico needs the public's help to obtain funding for four new veteran cemeteries.
State Secretary of Veterans Services Timothy Hale sat down with KOB's Nicole Brady on Eye on New Mexico. Hale said many veterans don't have a cemetery close to them since New Mexico only has two, the Santa Fe and Fort Bayard national cemeteries.
The state applied for federal grants to build cemeteries in Carlsbad, Fort Stanton, Gallup and Angel Fire, but dozens of other states are also competing for the funding.
The VA is expected to announce which communities will get the grants next month.
"Our hope is that the VA will come out and see the need in New Mexico and give us grant funding for all four of those cemeteries," Hale said. "What we're looking for now is for our citizens to write their legislators."
