ALBUQUERQUE -- Open Space units of the Albuquerque Police Department have located the missing man they were looking for earlier Monday on the Embudito Trail.

Police say the man is in his 50s, from out of town and had been traveling cross-country when he went for a hike Saturday.

The man said he left his gear and a note at the base of the trail as a safety precaution before hiking up to birdwatch.

According to police, the man "suffered a medical episode" while on the hike and then ran out of food and water. He could not walk back to the parking lot when he awoke, so he waited until rescuers could arrive and respond.

Police gave him water and said they were working to get the man evacuated and to a hospital for medical attention.
