ALBUQUERQUE -- Construction on a new 12,000-square-foot pavilion at Balloon Fiesta Park will begin after this year's Balloon Fiesta.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry announced Tuesday the Sid Cutter Pilots Pavilion will hold year-round events and replace the pilots pavilion tent.

The first phase of the new facility will include four large operable doors creating an indoor and outdoor connection. Located on the southeast edge of the balloon launch field, the building will capture panoramic views of the park.

Preliminary construction cost is estimated around $2.5 million.

A groundbreaking could happen as early as the end of October.
