KIRTLAND, N.M. (AP) - Residents of Kirtland want their community in northern San Juan County to become New Mexico's newest town.
The Daily Times reports that the county commission on Tuesday authorized a proposal for a January election and that the City Council in nearby Farmington has also approved a resolution supporting Kirtland becoming a town.
A 337-acre area is being proposed for incorporation. It's estimated to have 423 residents.
Resident Mark Duncan says incorporating would allow Kirtland to lobby for state funding, approve zoning to protect businesses and refine the community's identity.
The state Department of Finance and Administration is preparing to review the petition. Approval would set the stage for a Jan. 6 election.
