City: Intersection could be mud pit again

Heavy rain in Albuquerque Tuesday night washed out the intersection of Rio Bravo and University Boulevards SE, and crews say they can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.

The intersection, located at the bottom of one of Albuquerque’s biggest hills, quickly became a mud pit, stopping drivers in their tracks. Enough vehicles got stuck that the city had to close the area.

The city had built flood control measures around the intersection, including a drainage ditch, but the rain Tuesday night was more than the flood control was designed to handle. Crews have cleaned up the mess, but say it may happen again.

“What we've done is stabilize it,” said Michael Riordian of the city’s Municipal Development Department. “We're going to continue to stabilize it to make sure it stays as much in place as we can and then clean up the small little pieces that come out when we get the really heavy big storms.”

City officials say it’s a balance between the cost of building a permanent fix or just maintaining the area as needed. Coming out to fix the hill once in a while is currently the cheaper option.

Crews plan to add more plants to the hill to better stabilize the soil and hold dirt in place during large rainstorms.
