Work is underway to get the highly anticipated Rail Runner Santa Fe extension open in a couple of weeks. But with gas prices dropping lately, is it cheaper to drive to Santa Fe or ride the train?
Gas prices, sometimes they’re up and sometimes they’re down, but for those who don't want to deal with the constant fluctuation and unpredictability, they can hop on the Rail Runner.
"Compared to gas prices and everything else that have to go along with a car, I would say the deal is so good, not even I can complain," Rail Runner rider Rudolph Ortiz.
But are riders really going to save money?
Rail Runner officials say with current gas prices, the average driver would spend about $4 driving to Santa Fe from Albuquerque and another $4 driving back.
The current fare proposal on the rail runner for that route is the same, $8 for a day pass
But Rail Runner officials that comparison is only factoring in the cost of gas. They say when you add in wear and tear, maintenance, parking, and traffic jams, drivers will end up paying a lot more driving.
By the end of this week, Rail Runner officials are expected to release the specific details as to the fares, schedule, and opening day for the Santa Fe extension. They hope to open the extension by mid-December.
