Eyewitness News 4 has discovered a potato chip invasion underway in New Mexico. It's taking place in gas stations, convenience stores and supermarkets all across the state.
Matthew Chavez distributes original New Mexico style chile chips from his Route 66 jerky business on east Central Avenue in Albuquerque, and they are the real deal, cooked up in Milan, New Mexico. But they are losing shelf space to Colorado invaders.
"They should at least label the back and front that it's not from New Mexico. They're not getting a New Mexico product, so therefore they shouldn't label it New Mexico," Chavez said.
Ken DeWeese of Chile Traditions doesn't want the Colorado chips in his shop at Montgomery and Wyoming.
"People want New Mexico products, green chile, red chile, they want those types of products, so what people have started doing now is they're trying to capitalize on our state's name by saying 'New Mexico style,'" DeWeese said.
Ironically, the Colorado chip uses the authentic chile spelling with an "e", while the New Mexico chip uses the more anglicized chili with an "i".
In an unscientific taste test that took place in the Eyewitness New 4 newsroom, both chips were rated equally delicious.
