After Monday's traffic mess on I-40 near Tijeras Canyon, Eyewitness News 4 wanted to see if transportation officials fixed the problem that forced some drivers to be stuck in traffic for hours.
An Eyewitness News 4 crew began the trip at 5:17 p.m. heading eastbound on I-40 through the canyon.
The crew drove up to the area where workers are reconstructing the highway to help free up traffic, but the project backfired on Monday.
Transportation officials say a contractor worked much later than he was supposed to, moving barriers and repaving into the evening rush hour. Parts of eastbound I-40 through the canyon were reduced to just one lane, creating a huge backup.
On Tuesday, that contractor made sure he wrapped up his work early.
It only took the crew ten minutes to arrive at the Tijeras exit.
The Department of Transportation was flooded with calls and emails from angry drivers. Officials say they're confident it won't happen again.
On Thursday, westbound I-40 will be back up to two lanes through the construction zone.
The whole project is expected to be finished in October.
