State awards funds for solid waste projects

SANTA FE - Several New Mexico communities will be awarded grants from the state Environment Department to pay for the closure of landfills, groundwater monitoring wells and improvements to waste transfer stations.

The department announced the grants on Friday.

The grants, which total $250,000, will be awarded to the villages of Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Encino and Willard and the cities of Lordsburg and Santa Rosa.

Hidalgo, Santa Fe and Valencia counties and the Estancia, Southwest and Tri City solid waste authorities also will receive funding.

Environment Secretary Ron Curry says improvements at waste collection centers and transfer stations will help curb illegal dumping by providing better trash pickup services and greater access to stations.
