Fire burns south of Albuquerque

Firefighters worked into the evening Friday to keep flames from spreading in the area between Belen and Veguita in the area of Highways 346 and 304 in Valencia County.

Officials say a column of smoke was visible for 15 miles.

The fire was burning in thick brush and trees along the bosque, but crews say they have it surrounded.

They say they hope to get the flames extinguished soon, so long as winds do not pick up.

Officials say there are no buildings near the fire, but firefighters want to keep flames from spreading to a nearby horse farm.
