ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Walmart handed out $5.2 million in cash bonus to its New Mexico's associates on Thursday.
In total, Walmart doled out $560 million in total to its more than 890,000 employees across the United States. The bonuses are based on each store's fourth-quarter performances and the recent tax law changes.
The company will also increase its base pay wage to $11 per hour. Employees at an Albuquerque Walmart location on Central Avenue celebrated with a cookout.
"It's going to make us more competitive for an opening wage, so that's really cool," said Sean Oakley, a department manager. "And I think everybody has been expecting this on their paychecks for a couple of weeks, so we knew [March 8] was coming."
Walmart has 53 retail operations in New Mexico, spent $81.9 million on local suppliers and supports 7,359 supplier jobs. It paid more than $38.9 million in taxes and brought in more than $145.6 million in gross receipts tax.
