Deadline is Friday for insurance signup under Affordable Care Act

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Friday is the deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

It can be incredibly time-consuming finding the best plan, which is why the New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance has created a new tool to help New Mexicans compare plans that are right for them.

"It takes a few minutes and you might find that you have the ability to buy something that costs you very little and protects your family," Superintendent John Franchini said.

This year’s open enrollment period is six weeks shorter than last year, but Franchini said that hasn’t impacted enrollment numbers. As of Dec. 9, 26,366 New Mexicans had enrolled, which does not include those with automatic renewals. They expect to be within 3-5 percent of last year’s enrollment numbers.

Still, Franchini wishes they’d had more time.

"We did not have enough time to educate the public as to the savings that they could have in their plans," he said. "I believe if we had another six weeks we probably could have gotten 10,000 or 12,000 more people insured which I think is important in New Mexico."

Franchini wants to emphasize that while some may find higher premiums, rates overall have gone down and he says healthcare is inexpensive right now.

"You can buy insurance now and it is not expensive," Franchini said. "Don't believe Washington. It is not true for New Mexicans."

You can find which of the 214 New Mexico health plans is best for you here.
