ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – More Americans have signed up for health care in the first week than any other year during the same time.

Experts say New Mexico is expected to follow those national numbers, but first families will need to decide what plan to choose.

“What people need to know is there are actually better deals than there ever have been before,” said Colin Baillio, who handles communication and outreach for Health Action New Mexico.

So if you plan on signing up through the federal exchange, you'll want to do that before Dec. 15th, when the enrollment period ends.

“We're seeing across the board (that) if you get financial assistance, if you qualify for that, then you're going to have options that are less expensive than last year,” Baillio said.

A bronze plan usually means paying less per month, but more when you go see the doctor. A gold plan, meanwhile, means you usually pay more every month, but less when you need care.

“The best thing you can do is just go take a look and see if you can get a deal for your family,” Baillio said.

These charts from Health Action New Mexico explain what you could save.
