ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The La Cueva boys basketball team started the season 1-3. They have since won nine of their last 11 games.

Head coach Frank Castillo is leading the turnaround, and he's approaching a major milestone. Castillo has 698 career wins.

There are only five other boys basketball coaches in state history who've reached that mark. This is Castillo's 32nd season at La Cueva. He also spent eight years as a head coach at Cibola and has five state titles on his resume.

He never expected to be coaching this long and approach such a major mark.

"It's just one of those things I kind of fell into it. It was never really a plan of mine," he said. "I just fell into it at a really young age. I was helping at a Catholic school, helping with a seventh-grade basketball team actually. My cousin played on it. That kind of led from one thing to another and next thing you know I was teaching and coaching."

The Bears host Santa Fe Saturday night.
