ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The No. 1 team in the state hits the road in the playoffs this week.
The unbeaten Manzano Monarchs will play at Las Cruces Friday night in a state semifinal matchup. The Monarchs made it this far last year but couldn't reach the state final.
"Our motto this year was one more step, and each week that's what our goal is to be able to take one more step," coach Chad Adcox said. "And it really applies during this playoff time because if you don't win, you don't get to take that next step -- you're out."
In other semifinal action, No. 1 Eunice is at four seed Estancia in Class 5A. In 5A, No. 1 Artesia is also on the road at four seed Farmington.
Why do all these top teams have to go on the road? It's part of the "past history" rule of playoff football in this state.
"I do not care for that rule. I don't think it makes a lot of sense," Adcox said. "I think in any kind of playoff format if you're the No. 1 seed, you earned the home field advantage and that's what I think it should be. It is what it is. Nobody's listening if I'm crying about it anyway, so we'll just go out and we're going to play a great game. And it's always fun to play at the Field of Dreams."
